Default Well, it's official ...

my surgery date has been decided. On October 17, I get a full right ankle replacement. I hope it works.

Then probably 2 - 3 after that, it will be start all over with a full left knee. Every time a Dr looks at x-rays of my various parts, they all say 'You sure were tough on your body'. Makes me wonder about the whole fitness mythos. But it sure was fun.

At least you have Canadian healthcare. Here, you'd be on your way to being the six million dollar man.

Okay, I be home! Now to just let it heal for 6 months when hopefully, it will hurt less then it did before the surgery.

When the surgeon got to cutting, it was worse then he thought it was. He cleaned up the joint and when he tried to put in the prosthetic joint, it wouldn't fit because over time my Achilles has shrunk, so he had to lengthen my Achilles, and do ligament work all around my foot, not just on the outside.

It is up to the surgeon whether I get it of not, but I have a request in for copies of my post surgery x-rays. If I get them, I will share pictures of my new parts.

Everything seems to have gone fine, and drugs help with the pain.

Okay, now comes the toughest part...following the doctor's instructions and not trying to do too much too soon. And, yes physical therapy will suck, but they know what they're doing.

Take care, and give your body time to mend.

Hope you're only hobbling around for a short time. Heal up quick.

fiberglass, non-walking cast came off today. First chance I have had to see that my foot looks like since surgery. I included pics!!!! ... or I included pics depending on your particular interests ....

there is also a cut up my achilles tendon, but I was on a hospital gurney and not that much of a contortionist.

I took these before they cleaned up the dried blood and stuff, so those are the lines across the top of my foot near my toes.

Actually looks good to me. How are you doing with a walking cast?

That is an interesting question - my ankle feels pretty ... weird (don't really know how to describe it beyond that) when I put weight on it. I can go up and down stairs, but probably 3 flights would be be taxing.

For the last three weeks, showering/bathing/washing the stink off has consisted of taping a garbage bag over my lower leg and cast and kneeling in the tub, or just washing off at the sink. But today, I stood in the shower, and had an actual shower. But it was weird as well. I have reduced sensation in my foot and ankle at the moment, and without the walking boot to force everything to stability, movements are not being accurately transmitted to my brain so I tipped over against the wall a few times as I relearned how to process information about my body position. So the walking cast feels weird, and no walking cast is unstable at the moment.

The worst part of the walking cast is I have to sleep in it, so I don't mis-move in my sleep, or scratch open my suture lines with my other foot - and sleeping in casts with my foot elevated is turning out to be the hardest part of this whole experience. Which is why I am awake now.
