Default The Finger On TV

The only part of the Super Bowl that I saw, and it was by a fluke, was the halftime show. It was ok to listen to, but painful to watch. I hope that this was Madonna's last big TV gig... I never want to see her in HD again. Yikes!

Some chick who was performing, I think it was M.I.A. gave the finger. How scared were you and your family by this?

Was that the one who wasn't Nikki Minaj? We didn't know who she was but saw she wore an M on her outfit to remind her what her name must start with.

I didn't watch the half time show, but I did see the censored version of fingergate on news later last night.

I don't recall seeing the finger when I watched it live and I didn't know who that M.I.A. chick was beforehand.

Those apologies aren't good enough for the TV watchdog group the Parents Television Council, however. TMZ reports that the organization feels that NBC enabled M.I.A. to flip off the camera, and in doing so FAILED AMERICA. In a statement, they said, "It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer. Either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans, or they will feebly sit back and do nothing."

funny. again.. who is this mia person? As bad as the lip syncing was, I enjoyed CeLo Green

I left to go to YouTube to find it.

I didn't see the finger either. I was bored by the whole thing, except for Cee Lo.

For those who still don't know:

M.I.A. (artist)

Quote:
Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (Tamil: மாதங்கி 'மாயா' அருள்பிரகாசம், Mātaṅki 'Māyā' Aruḷpirakācam; born 18 July 1975), better known by her stage name M.I.A. (both a play on her name and abbreviation for Missing in Action), is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, painter and director of Sri Lankan Tamil descent. Her compositions combine elements of hip hop, electronica, dance, alternative and world music. M.I.A. began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker and designer in West London before beginning her recording career in 2002. Since rising to prominence in early 2004 for her singles "Sunshowers" and "Galang", charting in the UK and Canada and reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales in the US, she has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards and the Mercury Prize.

After reading that I still don't know who she is. I guess that explains why she flipped everyone off, not getting the attention she thinks she deserves.

B/c of the time difference the morale people here played the Super Bowl (I guess over & over again once it began airing) projected on to a big wall in the food court. Something about Mr. Green makes me really intensely dislike him. He is creepy...and reminds me of an evil Dwarf...Like the kind that will find me in my sleep & hack me to pieces.

...And just as I looked up from my dinner...I managed to see...The evil green dwarf staring right into my soul with his x-ray vision glasses. I shuddered...and returned to my dinner...scootching slightly to one side so that a planter covered his image.

This was the one & only bit of Super Bowl that I managed to see.

Sorry, I forgot that this board trends older and less up on pop culture than the group of people I work with. Her most famous song in the US is 'Paper Airplanes.' A minor musician in the US market.

I know a song about paper hearts...and jars of hearts...

Don't be a dick about it. My family in general not being into the pop scene is minor. If this had been a show featuring rock or punk bands (or Hell, even the Disney-kid-star type of band), I'd probably know exactly who everyone is.

Liking pop - knowing pop - being familiar with pop...Means jack shit. You can pretend you're cool b/c you're around a bunch of highschoolers all day with your finger on the pulse of the pubescent music scene...But you're just aging like the rest of us. Mofo.

M.I.A. isn't a particularly well-known artist. She does have a track record of stirring up controversy, though: I believe one of her videos attracted the attention of the censors because it was just too violent. Not raunchy, violent.

I wasn't trying to be a dick about it. And for what it is worth, being up on the music scene is helpful not only as a teacher and my ability to relate to my students, but as the faculty advisor who runs a small student radio station. In fact, we would be dead in the water if I wasn't up on pop, alternative, and internet/indy music. It is part of my job. So... please attempt to know your ass from a hole in the ground before you speak again.

In my experience, there's nothing more likely to make a school student cringe than a teacher or a parent who tries to be "up on the music scene", especially one who uses phrases like "up on the music scene". In my job, I get to hear what students say about their teachers behind their backs, and it's sometimes quite hilarious. It's the teachers who think they're bonding with their students by knowing what the latest "buzz" is who get rated worst, especially because they invariably get it very slightly, but tellingly, wrong. Except they'll never say this to your face.

Never forget that the very reason your students are listening to the latest music in the first place is that their parents and teachers are not listening to it and don't understand it. That is what makes it cool. You break that convention at your peril.
