Default Should flags fly at half staff for Whitney Houston ?

Controversy continues to swirl around the death of Whitney Houston, and now New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has stepped into the fray. The Republican governor has ordered U.S. and state flags flown at half-staff at all state government buildings on Saturday, the day of her funeral.

Christie defends his decision by deeming the singer a "cultural icon" of the state, along the lines of Jersey musicians Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He goes on to say, "Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state Her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride for many people in this state and for this state as a whole.

I thought that was reserved for dead presidents and veterans? No, I don't think they should fly at half staff for a dead pop icon no matter how huge he/she was.

It does not matter to me but if they do then they better plan on doing it for every dead person.

I think this should be reserved only for servicemen and women who pass away, not celebrities.

I personally don't like the celebrity cult (as one of my students told me yesterday, he can't listen to the radio right now because for the past three days it's been Whitney non-stop).

But attitudes do change, and there's no reason tradition can't change and adapt. There's a precedent: before the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the only flag that ever flew over Buckingham Palace was the Royal Standard, and only when the Sovereign was in residence, and it only ever flew at half mast when the Sovereign died. But in the face of overwhelming public opinion, which demanded that Buckingham Palace show some respect, they made up some new rules on the spot. They flew the Union Flag at half mast. Now, it's the tradition that the Royal Standard flies while the Queen is at home, and the Union Flag when she isn't.

Jesus, has everyone become such slaves to pop culture that this is what we've been reduced to as a society?

Flags at half staff are for people who die doing something noble (or were do-gooders before their deaths). Not cracked out former pop stars who drown in a bathtub after pumping themselves full of pills. Her death is sad, but there's a big difference between sad and noble.

Totally inappropriate.

well i'm sure they will fly flags at half staff in Jersey when Bruce Springsteen dies. And for some weird reason that seems understandable to me. He's like the most famous symbol jersey has, he has become a big part of Jersey, he has some jersey-based charities and all that crap. Whitney Houston is not associated with Jersey and did very little for the community or state. She is more california than jersey.

also did anyone else kinda think that houston was a huge asshole, because even for a celebrity she seemed extraordinarily dick-ish.

I'd say that's pretty accurate. Someone who can sing or play sports are made into heroes while people who do much more noble things for society are usually left forgotten.

yeah but politicians get half-staff pretty regularly and none of them do much of anything tbh

the whole thing is kind of silly at this point.

I think it completely takes away from the original idea/meaning of flying flags at half staff. No way should it be done for her.

It is silly...and I can almost understand the politician thing...b/c they are "serving" the nation...and were elected by the people. Technically.

I'd venture to say that people who do noble things don't seek attention; the very noblest shy away from it. For every Bill Gates, there are probably thousands of anonymous, ordinary people quietly working away in the background improving the lives of many.

And I don't think that much has changed recently, to be honest. You've all heard of Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner. Another 19th century figure was a man called Joseph Bazalgette, but how many of you know what his great contribution to society was?

um

Christie previously ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff following the June 2011 death of E Street Band mainstay and Jersey native Clarence Clemons.

^^ this was not a controversy because any member of the E Street Band is practically a saint in Jersey. there may very well be a statue of him somewhere.

I agree with this as well.

Do they fly flags at half-mast for national tragedies too? I can't remember if they do or not (and I'm certainly not saying that whitney dying is a national tragedy)

He was responsible for creating the sewer system in London.

Whitney doesn't deserve half staff.

i don't think she does either but i'm having trouble meshing that with my idea that bruce deserves half staff in jersey just for being the mother fucking boss.

More than that, in fact. The sewer system ended the cholera epidemic, unintentionally proving that the source of the outbreak was something in the water rather than the "miasma", thus paving the way for the germ theory of disease and modern medical science.

But well done for knowing who he was. Most never think about how important the sewers are, or spare a thought for the people who construct and work in them to stop us getting horrible diseases.
